Introduction.

The SPORTSMED·SA Day Surgery opened in 1990 as South Australia's first free standing day surgery and quickly established a reputation for excellence in the provision of high quality cost-effective orthopaedic surgery. We achieved full accreditation at our first survey easily meeting the demanding standards of the Australian Council for Healthcare Standards ACHS.

Since then we have performed approximately 6,000 surgical cases per year and many Olympians, National & International Sportspersons and 'regular' people have benefited from the outstanding level of care provided by our surgeons, staff and physiotherapists. We are now the single biggest providers of orthopedic day surgery in South Australia.

In 1998 we opened South Australia's first purpose built orthopaedic hospital adjacent to the Day Surgery and this facility also achieved full accreditation at our first hospital survey by the ACHS. This is an outstanding achievement and is a credit to our hospital Executive Director Claire Michalanney and our talented and dedicated staff. We have approximately 130 highly trained staff who enjoy unique benefits resulting in a high staff satisfaction rate.

Currently our surgeons perform around 3,000 cases per year in the hospital ranging from arthroscopic reconstruction of joints to complex revision joint replacements and tumour surgery.

Overall the combined workload of the day surgery and hospital is 6,500 cases per year making the SPORTSMED·SA the largest and most experienced dedicated orthopedic surgery facility in Australia.
